MERCEDES-BENZ SLK 230

Had it been available
for James Bond, the SLK is another contender in the "free spirit" category. It
is pure Mercedes with all of the refinements you would expect - and more. Again, this car is for someone tired of enduring life and keen to live it. It is easy on the eye without being ostentatious and is one of the few convertibles that look as good with the roof up as it does with it down. In fact, the mechanics of the roof are straight out of a Bond flick. At the push of a button, the roof lifts, the boot opens and, in a mere 30 seconds, the roof slips neatly into the boot and you are in a true open-top sports car. Of course, with the roof away, you're left with very little room in the boot for luggage. But this car was never meant for family holidays...It's designed for dirty weekends, and who takes luggage on these? With a supercharged 2.3 litre four cylinder, the SLK gives nothing away in the performance stakes and is a joy to drive. But it has the advantage of real character and is very much the little brother of the 500SL, which will burn a $300,000 hole in your pocket and isn't as quick off the mark. | |||||||||||||||||||
